-
- Welcome to the dawn of a new era for WarBirds on the Macintosh. You'll
- notice that with version 2.5, WarBirds uses a drastically different
- interface than it did in the past. The main purpose of this readme is to
- acquaint you with the new features of this interface, and to let you know
- what's coming next.
-
- As an online game, WarBirds is in a state of continual development. The
- current release does not yet implement all features advertised in the
- interfce, but most of the items missing are indeed in development.
-
- When you first start up WarBirds, you'll be presented with a menu of
- options.
-
- Go Online-- starts WarBirds in its Online mode. It will ask for your name
- and password (optionally saving this information for you), then prompt you
- for which arena you'd like to visit. Then, you're playing online!
-
- Practice Offline-- starts WarBirds in its Offline mode. Several different
- games are available for testing your WarBirds piloting skills.
-
- Head To Head-- Will begin a version of WarBirds in head-to-head mode.
-
- Create Account-- Account creation is not implemented in version 2.5 of
- WarBirds for the Macintosh.
-
- Visit Warbirds Webpage-- Though I'm not certain why you need this much help
- in finding our website (http://www.imagiconline.com/), this selection will
- work if you have Internet Config installed (or MacOS 8.5).
-
- Setup-- this brings up the Setup dialog box, detailed below.
-
- Help-- help is not implemented in version 2.5 of WarBirds.
-
- Quit-- quits the program.
-
- It is very important to note that WarBirds currently only allows you to
- make one selection from this list! After you use one item, WarBirds will
- exit and you will need to restart the game.
-
- Once you are in the tower (either after going online or beginning offline
- practice), you will be presented with a menu in the upper left hand
- corner. The items on this menu are:
-
- Fly-- starts flight in the currently selected plane.
-
- Select-- allows for plane and field selection. Other selection panes are
- currently in development. Also allows for selection of offline game mode.
-
- Setup-- setup is currently not available in the tower.
-
- Help-- help is not implemented in version 2.5 of WarBirds.
-
- Quit-- quits the program.
-
- Also, the message buffer has a set of buttons next to it. Those buttons
- are:
-
- Radio-- brings up the radio bar. Also available by hitting "/".
-
- Voice-- the voice menu is not available in version 2.5 of WarBirds, but
- voice communication is still available on many Macintosh models.
-
- Exit Plane-- exits the plane, if possible.
-
- KeyHelp-- brings up a pane of information on several topics to help in
- learning the keyboard interface for WarBirds.
-
- Roster-- displays players currently online.
-
- Room-- enables communication with others in your room.
-
- Setup info:
-
- Stick: allows for joystick configuration, including choosing stick type,
- setting damping and scaling, and mouse control.
-
- Flight-- allows you to set various optons for online and offline flight.
-
- Sound-- allows for relative and master sound levels to be set.
-
- HTH-- Sets up various options for Head To Head
-
- Colors-- allows for country colors and tracer colors to be modified.
-
- Video-- allows you to select the video mode that WarBirds will use.
-
- Network-- allows you to choose which route your computer will use to
- connect to iMagic Online. Few players should need to change this.
-
- Keyboard-- changing keyboard setups through a dialog is not implemented
- in version 2.5 of WarBirds. See the files in the "keymaps" folder for more
- information.
-
- A final note to our veteran players-- this version of WarBirds represents a
- significant redevelopment of much of the user interface. Some of these
- items may take a while to become accustomed to, but trust me-- it will pay
- off in the long run.
-
- Thanks for playing WarBirds!
